How much is safe? I ordered some wheels and the tire guy took me to the back to show me that the lip runout was pretty bad on two of my wheels. The manufatuer said they hold .040, but it was clearly an 1/8" or more. The tires balanced out and I tried to ask if they were safe to run but the manufacruer was like a broken record and just kept saying return them if your not happy. the place I bought them is over over an hour drive to have them checked and take another 4 weeks for two more wheels. I can't run the two I got because they are different size wheel&tire both, a front and rear.

On a steel wheel the bead seat area radial and lateral are what count.

usually the lip follows the seat pretty close, but I'd be concerned with the seat.

From what I was reading, it could vibrate above 60-70 mph. I've had a lot of wheels mounted and never had them show me this before. Also reading some slip in quality fro the manufactuer. I guess I'll take them to the place I bought thm next week and have them check em to be sure.

Try measuring an inflated tire with a dial indicator on the tread and on the sidewall.
You will be horrified.

Yah I read someting bout that.

Still I wonder if the air/rubber keeps thing kinda equal between the wheel and the road despite.

Also paid $250 a wheel bout and they are race wheels, so kinda expect them to be better than some random flashy wheels. I just really wanted to run them this weekend with the drag radials.

yrs ago i returned 8 of 12 new wheels.
1 is out .040", but i gave up and put it on the back.
slight vibration at 55, goes away at 60.

The service Spec for OEM wheels alloy wheels is likely less than 0.06 inch.

In the 70s Chrysler said Combined runout of mounted tire should be less than 3/32" for cop cars radial or lateral.
The Japanese made snow tires I mounted on my old Volvo (alloy wheels with low runout) last season beat that easily. They still needed some modest balance weights to get rid of the 60-70 mph steering wheel sensation.

Finally took them to be checked. 3 where bad(2 really out) and I got my $ back. They where all new weld RTS wheels, had to special ordered medium pad to clear my calipers.
