Dial Back timing lights w/MSD ignition

Post by slowmobile »

I know that this is a no no with the multiple spark units but can I get accurate timing with the light set to zero using the marks on the balancer for reference?

Thanks.

Read this article. It will help answer your question and may open your eyes. It used to be on the MSD web page, but they got rid of it for some reason. Any way, read it and see what you think afterwards. CJ

Yes. I bought a cheapo light this evening and came home to check against my MAC light. Very nice signal with no bouncing around. Timing all in was within 2 degrees but the initial was WAY off. About 6-7 degrees.

Wow, 6-7 degrees is a big difference!

I use the Sears Craftsman model mentioned that I by chance had before I found this article. I've been happy with it so far over the last ten years or so I've owned it.

Dial back lights have never been a favorite of mine because it is too easy to make a mistake with them. On a damper that has no marks for total timing engraved on it, they sure are nice though. CJ

I use and recommend the plain Craftsman model.
