new car, drove to track 10.05 at 135,critic this combo

Post by rickster »

guys i built a 69 camaro approx 3400 w/ driver

pump gas 548" bbc, made 752 hp at 6400/670 ft. lbs at 5300[open headers]

has a g-force 4 speed with a 2.98 first gear

4.29 gears /14x32 tire

i wanted to see if this 12.7 multiplied first gear ratio would work on the track because of it's streetability,i am willing to cut back a little on that for better 60' times and run a 4.71 gear, still not bad at 60 mph turning 3000rpm's

anyway with only a few runs i got a [lazy] 1.43 60'er and ran 10.05 at 135 thru the 3-1/2" exhaust

is it feasable to pick up .05 in the 60' by adding 10% in gearing??

if it did pick up .05 in the 60' and picked up a tenth as a result, can i expect a 1 mph increase as well?? thanx

Hey rickster, great 1st time out numbers :!:

I also run a G-force stick in a 1st gen Camaro, similar HP/TQ depending on boost, blower SB. Also 3400#, taller gears w/less tire.

To try and answer your question, I'm no expert, but lower gears won't change that much.
Your car will most likely go high 9's at 136+ with mid 1.3 60's JMHO.

I'm still sorting mine out too, but I've gone 137.9 mph, and currently with less boost, 1.38 60'.
vidio last night http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUUGXBybYZw

Is yours a 4-link, or ladder-bar rear sus? Whose clutch do you use?

Lets compare notes, and maybe we can both go 9's.

thanks, mine is also ladder bars w/dbl adj coil overs and a sintered iron adjustable, from Rob Youngblood @ http://www.advancedclutches.com/products.htm#Sportsman

Rear gear is 3.50 w/3.25 1st, 11.37 total.
Rear tire is 10.5W that measures 90" role out, about 28.5" dia.

I have run a 3.0 and a 3.25 gear in the past with a 28" tire. Back then it had a Street-twin clutch, which was killing the gears and tires.

We could both use a little more gear (3.89 for me, 4.71 for you) but when I tried them in my computer drag simulator program, we will only see about a .07 to .08 improvement. It's worth doing someday, just won't see the tenth you want.

I'm being stubborn trying to use QA1 coil overs up front, they are single adjusable (90/10)"R" series. So far there working ok with GW C-arms w/ there del-a-lum bushings.

What's your next move? Are you going to try the gear change?
You got any pics or vidio, you can post? I bet that thing looks great with those 14x32's all tucked up under there.

I'm using the Pro racing sim http://www.proracingsim.com/dragsimmainpage.htm
Probably similar to yours, we got to same results.

I see you found your way over to the UMTR site, it's just getting going again, was down for a while. We can talk more there.

Neat program, I like it :!:
Good thing my daughter was here to get it setup, I get confused easy.
Has more detail than my program.
I need to tweek my set up a little more but it's real close.
Unfortunatly the gear change still says it's only worth .05 to .06et, .04 in the 60'.

Rick, you have too much tire. The slipper clutch might help but you could get away with much less tire. Try a 10.5W x 29.5 and cure all you problems. Your drivability is going to suffer with more gear. Do you drive those slicks on the open road? If so, it's illegal, and can get you a big ticket if you run into a trooper with no sense of humor, or worse. A friend of mine has a Super Stock that makes about the same power as your street 548 and it has never gone quicker than 10.04 @ 134 MPH, so your's isn't that far from normal. A heavier flywheel might get you through the bog too. Have you considered going with a lower first gear in the transmission? You would get more multiplication with a 3.25 first and the rear end gear you have. Adding 5 more pounds of flywheel will give much more initeria. Other things to try would be drag radials such as the M/T E.T. Street Radials or E.T. Drag Radial slicks as they have less initial bite and roll easier which should improve your trap speed some.

Hi Ed, he has a video over on the Team Chevelle board. It is a real neet Camaro too, it looks red in the video but i think it's orange.
