Tapered cartridge rolls

Post by winr »

I am finishing cleaning up the bowls and ports in my FE heads.

I am leaving the intakes rough but would like to make the exhaust ports and chambers fairly smooth.
I think I need some tapered cartridges to get into the corners of the exhaust ports and chambers.

I see Summit has some 3/4" tapered cartridges that use a 1/8" collet.

Any advice as to what others use ??

Mild .040 over 390 going in a 1965 F-100
C8 heads, forged pistons/.047 quench, Comp 260 H cam, 1 3/4" SS headers.

TIA.

I've never used the summit brand, but I do know that the "dr air" kit is of great quality for just a few bucks more. And it contains more than enough rolls for several sets of heads. It can be ordered through dr j's performance. I've even made made own from Emory cloth and Pvc glue in a pinch. Not pretty, but worked great. And thrifty! Best of luck on your build!

You're quite welcome sir. Tip: if you decide to put a few of your own together....you can buy Emory cloth at local craft shops for next to nothing. Cut it into 1 inch wide lengths, apply a thin bit of PVC glue to the center one third of the strip (keeping it away from the edges so it doesn't get hot and leak out into your work) and roll them up to the thickness and taper that you need. Again, not pretty, but very effective for a home job. And cost conscious. Good luck with that classic. Keep it going for another 20 years!

Try GOODSON, they have a bunch of different styles and are reasonably priced.

-here's a list of some abrasives (with prices) I have, you might find something there.

-you'll also need mandrels.
