Post by justahoby »

My wife has a 68 camaro rolling chasis i am building for her... Just want some daily driver 327 ideas ( no she dont need big toque) and is afraid to ride in my 383 pick up... she has a bit of a temper and needs balls in traffic when pissed... give me 327 ideas and combos here! thanx! This is mild street build with a little scream id like to see to handle a mild geared car :)

Do a late Model 5.7 vortec motor, with a hyd roller....... Freshen it, upgrade the cam and valvetrain, put a 600 holley on it with a Performer rpm, some headers and use a OD auto trans behind it.

Sticking with the 327,
8 years ago I put together a .030 327 for the wife in a CJ7 for just the opposite reason. She tends to drive it like she stole it.

.030" cast Silvolite flat top 4 relief pistons, GOOD molly rings. Block decked and squared to +.010". GM .028" head gaskets, Pro Action Vortec heads, Ferrea 6000 1.94"/1.5" and 64cc Measured. Earson 350 hp 327 Hyd flat tappet cam and 110# springs @ 1.8". Air gap intake with 600 Holley Avenger Vacuum secondary. HEI distributor welded advance slots to allow 32* total with 15* initial. 2" ram horn manifolds and stock replacement mufflers.

This has been a great little engine that has plenty of power, idles nice revs to 6500+ when she gets on the freeway  and gets good mileage without breaking the bank on the build. The CJ with the cage and hard top weighs #3450 empty.

Good luck with your build.

I just noticed you posted in > other tech?

To the mods??

This really needs to go to engine tech for better/more involvement.

327. Use 186 style 64 cc heads. Pocket Port them really well. 1.94 /1.6 valves. Flat top pistons. Performer RPM intake. 650 cfm carb. Isky 262/270 hyd cam on 110 lobe spread. Made great torque and pulled to 6000. Never dynoed it but it was cheap and worked great.

A slightly different combo.

Block - Late model, 1 piece rear main, roller cam block, decked to 8.995" (approx .030)
Heads - 95 - up Vortec 305 heads, fitted with 2.02/1.5 valves, bowl blended, 54 - 55cc, polished comb chambers and 3+ angle VJ (45,60,75, 80 ish....) 90% throat.
Crank - 92 - 97 4.3L Caprice "baby LT1" (3.1' stroke), 1 piece rear main seal
Rods - 6.0" (mfg. of your choice)
Pistons - Flat top, approx 5cc valve relief, 1.433 comp height (KB "claimer" 9906hc, or Speedpro equiv.)
Head gasket - .015 - .019 shim from Fel-Pro or Mr. Gasket

Cam - Custom grind Comp XFI hyd roller. 224-230 @.050, .358" lobe / 236 - 242 @ .050, .362' lobe, 114-116 LSA installed 4-6 deg adv. (4,7 swap will sound even
better)
Headers - 1 5/8" w/3.0" collector would be plenty big and refer to "Pipemax" for primary and collector length.

Very streetable (86+ octane fuel), very efficient (22 - 26+ mpg hwy) and would give your 383 truck a pretty good run (on the street that is). The smallish cam will give it high idle/cruise vacuum (for efficiency) and the combination of the "high" compression and small cam will give it off-the-line/ pull-into-traffic power She will appreciate and the tight quench will allow it to run on 86 or higher octane fuel @ 40-45 degrees total timing @ idle (I'm assuming vac advance will be used). The bigger valves and "ported" bowls will give a bit more top-end rpm power than the cam spec's suggest. It will "hang on" at least 5 - 800 rpm more.
Run a 3.73 - 4.56 gear for in-town and an OD transmission for the hwy. Would work with 25 - 2800 stall from good convertor company If you don't give it a bit of gear, it will require too much throttle input around town, thus killing efficiency. This combo should make an honest 350 - 375+ hp (not magazine hp).

{I run a similar combo (4.06 x 3.1) in my "track only" car with more cam (250/270, .800" valve lift), 230cc Canfield heads and 11.4:1 comp on 93 octane pump gas. Track only cause the block is filled within 1" of the deck.}

Better Idle quality and fuel efficiency at cruise rpm's.

It may not actually require that much timing with 86 octane, but header temp and overall engine temp (@ idle) will be very good indicators of too little timing. I stand by 40-45 deg TOTAL timing (incl vac adv) @ idle as a good ball park.
My little engine runs best @ 48-50 deg with a locked out dist. This has been thoroughly tested at the track. Gotta have some timing lead @ 8500+ rpm.

Of course this can't be acomplished without a good carb. I prefer the 4011/4012 style Holley's (now sold by Summit Racing with their name on it) with the high gain, downleg boosters over other out-of-the-box "street" carbs with small straight boosters.

I would also recommend that you upgrade to a beehive spring like Comp Cams pn 26918. You'll also need to machine (shorten) the valve guide tops to prevent retainer to guide interference at this kind of lift (anything over .470" or so) and probably use +.100 length valves to accept the 1.8" installed height of that spring. However, DON'T BE TEMPTED to scrimp on the spring price, because the correct spring pressure will be much cheaper in the long run.

while my 383 is on a late model roller block I got another here also got a 327, and a 307... i dont think im going to go with a shorter stroke but that 3.1" one piece crank seems like an interesting build .... sure ot was a screamer.. glad you all posted your builds... post more if you like

You mentioned your wife not needing lots of torque, so that's why I went there. Just in case I didn't make it clear, that short shroke/cam combo will have plenty of bottom end, just not so much that the car would get outta shape everytime you poke it, but it would pull hard to 65-6800+ if she wanted to.

You could apply everything else to a 3.25" stroke engine with the exception of the combustion chambers (you would want them closer to 57 - 58cc). That cam would still work great, but you could back the ignition timing off a couple of degrees to kill some "stoplight" wheel spin.

The deck height would be 9.0 and you could then run a more conventional, .028" composition gasket from Victor Reinz or Mr. Gasket.
Pistons would be standard comp. height for 5.7 rods.

Here's mine:

'69 235hp 327 from a full size Chevy
STOCK, untouched short block assembled by GM in 1969.
217 heads from an early '90s 300hp/350 GMPP crate engine - 2.02/1.60, 64cc
Reed 264/272, 214/218 @ 0.050, .450"/.460", 110 LSA / 106 ICL hyd FT cam
Hedman 1.5" headers, 2-1/2" exhaust w/ x-pipe.
ZZ4 intake
800 CFM Q-jet

Just a "no budget" combo put together with parts I had laying around (or bought cheap). Runs really well in my '65 Nova. It's not a major powerhouse, but a nice "daily driver" type engine. Just a hint of an idle sound, and 18-20 mpg with a powerglide and 3.08 gears on highway trips @ 70 mph.
