Aluminum Rad repair

Post by cuslog »

I've got a fairly expensive, custom made Al. Rad.
Its split and weeping where the core and bottom tank join.
My local rad guy won't even look at it.
This joint seems to be some kind of hi-melt point wax or epoxy or ?
I read one thread where a guy says he repairs this joint with JB Weld, thinned with alcohol so it will pour into this area.
It is down in a "U" shaped recess where you could pour something in there. What do they use to seal this joint ? Its a Griffin Rad if that helps.
Anyone else got any experience here ??

Griffin rads have tanks that are epoxied in place, and if the glue splits they're a right bitch to fix. Or modify, if you need to re-weld the inlets and outlets to a different position, which is why I hate them, a bit too much heat and you need a new one, or fix it like mentioned. I'd roughen the area near to the split as best I could and pour enough hot/thin JB in there to cover the split and a substantial amount of area around it, for strength.

Thanks,
yes, looks like I'll be trying the thinned out JB weld thing.

Just wanted to see if maybe I had any other options before I tried the JB weld --- that kind of seems like its maybe a one shot deal -- and no turning back. #-o
