Aluminum Driveshaft question

Post by Dave Koehler »

1:Does anyone know what the glue is that holds balance weights on an aluminum driveshaft?
2: Where to buy it?

Thanks

First, contact 3M or Henkel as either may have an off-the-shelf solution that is not ensnarled in a proprietary formulation situation. Many other adhesive manufacturers as well.

Some (many others) patent references:

Epoxy resin, zinc or barium sulfate, polyamide:

Epichlorohydrin-bisphenol a epoxy resin, inorganic fibrous material, powdered zinc or barium sulfate, polyamide and a catalyst:

A balance weight and a method of balancing rotary shafts:

At the time that the original patent was written, UV cured products were becoming very popular in the dental field:

Using liquid epoxy resin; curing:

Methods for dynamic balancing:

DANA patent for welding the weights on (in another they spot weld):

The stuff they used on the aluminum shaft for our T 600-equipped (0.82:1 5th) road racer (9700 shaft RPM @ 185 MPH) appeared to have been recycled bubblegum, judging by the hole the balance weight made in the tin work alongside the driver's thigh... We took our chances re warpage with 3 spots of weld on the replacement. So far (2 seasons) so good. The balance shop had never maxed one out at 10,000 RPM before. They rigged a remote control and cleared out the shop for the occasion, but all went well.

I heard the same epoxy they used on trunk panels of gm cars in the 80s is the same as the epoxy used to hold rebar in holes drilled in concrete.. Maybe ?? I dunno.. I did try it long time ago and glued a rocker panel in , it held for years, cut them off to put on another truck after a little clean up  this time welded...lol

I'm assuming this is the epoxy they use it has the " bubble gum wad" look
As I'm approaching 40,I still think I'm 20. What the hell is wrong with me?

I was speaking of the tensile strength, not the appearance... :(

Oh.. Lol makes sense now. Yea.. Body panels don't spin at 10,000 rpm
