If you can first explain how what you are concerned about "condensing" gets into in increasing amounts (?), in I assume a fully oil filled non leaked sealed container, I might be able to explain.
The storing "in the sun" is more of a scare tactic in this discussion, and has as much bearing on the shelf life as not also store oil inside the containment shell of a nuclear reactor.

"Scare Tactic" really, why dont you store your racing gas in a clear container in the sun, after all its further refined crude, ever hear of oxidation, dont think you need to be in a nuclear plant for that.
Dave, if you have stock of old oil then you are the perfect candidate to get it tested, your out $25 but would be able to feel comfortable about dumping old technology in your engine or not

I know I am going out on a limb, but it has to be a very , very few here on this site would ever store fuel in a plastic container in direct sun for any length of time, so making the comment about sunlight is IMO just a non needed scare tactic. With oil stored in direct sunlight, I also suspect the plastic would suffer more damage then the oil, but still most knowledgeable here would not do it in the first place, and I still stand by my original comment.

Sometimes they use dates for rotation of stock and other times places just require one. I asked Valvoline if their oil expired n they said sometimes the additives settle and to shake the bottle, so I always sake my bottles now.

I have an unopened can of Kendall 40 weight race oil from 1970 sitting on the shelf. Wonder what's going on inside?

If it's in a sealed container and it's full.........how does the oxygen get inside for "oxidation" of the oil?
The same way that the oil somehow gets out?

It's like storing methanol in a sealed container and thinking that somehow it's going to absorb water.

If the additives do settle to the bottom of the container, shaking probably won't help much. Better alternative, if you fear such separation, would be to turn the container over on a regular basis.

I would like to know what secret sauce has a density less than than the oil itself?

Just randomly, a typical motor oil has a specific gravity of .8721:

Alkyl ZDDP 1.1370;
Aryl ZDDP .9847;
Calcium Carbonate 2.7

Density is defined as mass per unit volume; it has the SI unit kg. m-3 and is an absolute quantity. Specific gravity is the ratio of a material's density with that of water at 4 °C (where it is most dense and is taken to have the value (*) 999.974 kg. m-3) and is therefore a relative quantity with no units.Aug 9, 2007

I would pay the $25 to have it tested just to settle this discussion :lol:
