Does anybody make something like this that is strong enough for an American V-8?

have them; or are all capable of knocking out a sequential gearbox with big shaft centers. You probably need something like 80-90mm shaft centers and spur gears with a coolant pump and DEEP pockets. This is a whole 'nother world than people stuffing spur gears in a modified T10 or Toploader. Serious engineering chops are required.
Seq. gearboxes are a hard sell in the USA, but big business in Aussie V8 Supercars

We looked at it, but the cost to get it off the ground was VERY high

Weismann traction products will build you one in the USA. They do amazing work.

But just how do these work? By up-shifting and down-shifting through each gear like a motorcycle transmission does? Kind of like a, "ratchet action", through the gears?

TRADITIONALLY there is a racheting drum used to change through the gears, much like a bike.

With some ingenuity it should be possible to design and make a motorcycle style ratchet shifter actuate shift rods for all of the various transmissions that work that way - there's an Aussie company called Renagate that does one for 4-speeds, and making a version for a 5 speed G-Force or Jerico box shouldn't be that hard. Additionally to the other companies mentioned, there's Saenz who have a 5 speed sequential they say will handle 700 ft/lbs.

Every time I investigated Seq boxes, the torque ratings where on the low side for healthy V-8's, and a bit pricey downstroke when in the over 500ft/lb range. That will decrease i expect overtime stating the obvious.

Another add-on kit is the SSS Sequential Shifter for the T56

I'm in sort of the opposite boat - it seems like there's very few good racing (dog box, straight cut gears, capable of having a 1st gear around 2:1) H-patterns made these days and about zero 6-speed ones.

After blowing up ~ $10,000 worth of face-plated/dog box converted) TKO 600s in our 380 c.i. 700 HP/550 lb-ft. SBF road racer in three years (the last two survived a total of 14 laps), we went with a G-Force GSR H-pattern 4 speed box from http://www.racetechservicesinc.com/. this year. Flawless to date!
We use a 1.93:1 1st, but they offer 12 other choices, from 2.48 to 1.80. Since the car is capable of almost 100 MPH in 1st, we could do with a 'pit creeper' bull-low, but the clutch has held up so far...

I saw that at PRI, last? year, looked like it was fairly new when I spoke them, heard any real world reviews yet?
