Short deck 615 big block chevy

Post by evanjm »

Hey all,

I'm looking for an off the shelf piston for a 615 short deck big block Chevy combination. Preferably something flat top and forged. Anyone know of anyone making something like this?

Thanks in advance,
Evan

Please tell us what your proposed B&S is to be?

I thought a 604.8" was about the largest we could make with a 9.8" tall deck BBC block? (4.625"b x 4.5" s here)...

And I really think the 598.3" is a tad more practical? (4.60" b x 4.5" s here)..

I know that I am partial to the 588" engine. (4.625" b x 4.375" s here)..

If you are using a 4.750 stroke and a 6.385 rod mahle motor sports has a FT forged available in singles
I am using them in my shop truck in a std deck BBC 502 block

Shafiroff racing offers a 615" short deck that uses JE/SRP pistons. They might offer them for sale if not a proprietary deal.

What's a 4.750 stroke 6.385 rod assembly like to balance?

I know these "big" short decks are common, but the reality is it's a really bad idea from the get go!

Choice of block used could make it even worse!

Recently gave feedback to Dave Calvert (C-P pistons) about what we were seeing on ALL the pistons coming out of a fairly high HP unit. Upon disassembly we had an issue with just about every previous brand of piston we used for this particular build, sent a couple to Dave and got some real good answers. They were literally trying to "screw" their way out the bottoms of the bores at BDC.

As a result of this entire occurrence C-P put a different cam grind on their next set we used, took the feedback again and ended up using this very grind on their "Bullet" line of pistons. To the best of my knowledge it's still the same today!

After the initial runs with their new pistons the ride went a whole lot faster with no other changes!

On a side note, this was ONLY a 4.250" stroke.

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. I felt our issue was a combination of problems but the block ended up being the real culprit! Could never really thank Dave or the guys at C-P enough for their help.

What block is the OP using to get to his 615 and what will the ultimate bore size be? This makes a lot of difference if he should even go there with such a short piston.

Any word back from this guy? I was kicking around the 604 idea as I have a 4.625 block sitting in the shop and a used 4.5 stroke crank and 6.385 rods on the shelf. With a set of iron merlin heads on top it would make for a sleeper.

It's that 'Similar Topics' index that's the culprit. Many of these retreads are still very relevant but not all deserve reanimation. :)
