I may have missed this in a previous thread discussing these coatings.

I was thinking/wondering if any of these coating could be useful in reducing friction in typical gear type oil pumps. Would it even be worthwhile unless it was a max effort motor?

Lifters bores are another possibility however that could pose a problem shipping a block back and forth just for lifter bore coating. Bronze bushings installed by a local machine shop may be very cost effective.

120 views and no opinions as yet. I am surprised. Reducing the parasitic loss driving an oil pump has to take more than just a few HP.

The question is could this be a cost effective improvement? If so, which coating? As there are a number of companies offering these coatings.

I don't doubt the cup teams have already looked into this. What are they doing?

Well, are we talking DLC coat one gear?

Not saying it IS a bad idea, but it would be very ironic to use a dry film lube in an oil pump.....it sure ain't dry in there. :lol:

I've thought a piston skirt coating in the housing would be good, make it too tight and let it make it's own clearance. Works for superchargers.....same thing I figure.

On their website, Line2Line specifically mentions the benefits of building up oil pump clearances.

Yes Bill, I talked with them about this and am going to send in 10 used LS "gear sets" to do(makes it cost effective, I was quoted $20 each at that quantity). Of course brain 1 says YES, good experiment. Brain 2 says I will have time in disassembly/assembly(which happens anyway) and then it's only ~$100 for a new iron melling and I risk it not working and have to change pump in vehicle :?

I use oil as an anti friction coating on my engines.

When talk is about engine parts coatings I think we should better define "anti-friction" versus "anti-wear" to better understand the differences between how various coatings and metal treatment systems work in an engine on various parts.
