Will GM ever bring back the 400 block
If they could do it and sell it for under a grand think they could sell like hotcakes
why stop making them?
Still tons of guys building Gen 1s.
Market for the big $ already done, of course theres cheap chinese stuff too
Dont see why these wouldnt sell
Offering a retainer plate option to run a roller would be a plus

Re: Will GM ever bring back the 400 block
I would doubt it. IMHO I think with blocks such as the Dart SHP on the market the GM 400 block would be limited or a niche market. Plus all the cheap junkyard LS blocks available. I think the market place is slowly moving on.
Re: Will GM ever bring back the 400 block
The tooling is gone, gone, gone... and from what I understand it was all worn out patched-up garbage long before they finally stopped making small-blocks.

You would think so as I do also, but it should've came about 10-15 yrs ago. Just think of the crate engine market, especially torque starved truck applications.cuisinartvette wrote: ↑Fri Nov 10, 2017 5:17 pm If they could do it and sell it for under a grand think they could sell like hotcakes

What about the tooling that's in Mexico that's used to make the castings used in the crate engines? 400 Hecho en Mexico...

Sell like hot cakes? problem is there's way more buying the LS type like Coffee!

Re: Will GM ever bring back the 400 block
Isn't there still a bunch of 400 SBC blocks/engines out there? Just have to hunt them down is all
Look in ton work trucks and big vans and of course the big Chevy's.
I had one running on my engine stand but got rid of it! Now I only have a 4-bolt and a 2-bolt block. I'm going to make my short-stroke 325" engine out of the better block if I don't die first do to old age...
4.155" b x 3.00" s = 325" engine here. I'm gonna rpm it like I used to do my old junk301!!

Re: Will GM ever bring back the 400 block
You guys wanna send some of these 'laying everywhere' 400 blocks our way?
If you can find one here you'll pay around $1200 for a std bore 2 bolt block, more for a 4 bolt.
I'd build a lot more 400-410 cube street engines instead of 383's if I could get 400 blocks at a decent price.
450-500hp street engines with 400-410 cubes are real nice for cruisers with some squirt, don't need extra loose converters & deep gears.

We've got a few and can get more. How much would it cost to ship a pallet with six short blocks, say 2000#, to OZ?

Therin lies the issue - to be worthwhile you gotta fill a shipping container to keep freight per block to decent levels!
I can't afford a shipping container full of engine blocks!

Why would they bring them back? Dart SHP blocks are as nice as they come in the budget segment and a great back for the buck.

Re: Will GM ever bring back the 400 block
Unfortunately the dart are no where near the price of the GM block here. It's sometimes hard to get a customer to spend that bit extra. A new factory GM 400 block would be an easy sale over here (Australia) but in reality a small market.
